Learning Objectives: 1. SWBAT identify and discuss the work of contemporary installation artists, including Sandy Skoglund. 2. SWBAT collaborate as a team on developing an artist statement. 3. SWBAT visualize and map out an artwork on paper before beginning. 4. SWBAT organize and use a variety of materials to transform a physical area into an artwork. Essential Questions: How have artists transformed spaces into places in contemporary art? What are the meanings behind these installations? What do we have to say, and how can we transform a space into a place? Materials: everything, which could include the kitchen sink Activities: Introduce students to the work of various installation and earthwork artists and what they have done--Rachel Whiteread, Robert Gober, Michael Heizer, Christo...Discuss what the possibilities are for what they are trying to say... Focus in on artist, Sandy Skoglund, and even more so, the images above. A great resource for this: www.sandyskoglund.com Students then can be asked to break into groups to create an installation on their own. An installation that transforms a space into place. Students are to begin by coming up with a concept of theme for their installation and by choosing where there installation will be. They then will do a preliminary mapping of what they are going to do (which will always change of course), which includes a list of materials. Students gather what they need and begin. Introductory Question: What are some spaces that surround us that are in drastic need of change, of revision, to be more conducive to community. |
Within this project, students synthesize and apply what they've learned in the unit to an actual artwork. They are to work together, building community among their classmates... |
