VPN-1 SecuRemote doesn't work

Problem

So, I was installing VPN_Client_w9x.exe on my crappy Windows ME PC, and I got this error message.

There appears to be an adapter bound to multiple instances of a TCP/IP protocol.  SecuRemote may not install correctly.  Would you like to proceed anyway?  If in doubt, please consult your system administrator.

OK, so the first time this happened, I ignored the warning and said 'Yes'.  VPN-1 SecuRemote did not work at all.  I even bought a new home network router to try and fix the problem.  That didn't work.  I tried opening all kinds of ports on my firewall.  That didn't work either.

Solution

So this is what I did to fix it.  It may or may not work for you.  Hopefully it will.  You will have to reboot during this fix, so maybe you will want to print out this page or bookmark it.

Go to Start->Settings->Control Pannel.  Go to Network.  There will be a list of network adapters and protocols.

If you have extra TCP/IP protocols, remove the extra ones.  Leave one of the TCP/IP protocols in there.  Then hit OK.  Go ahead and reboot.

After rebooting, you may want to check the Network settings again just to make sure all of the extra stuff is gone.  (There should be on TCP/IP protocol).

Now run the VPN-1 installer again.  (VPN_Client_w9x.exe).  Voila!  The installer will run without the warning message, and VPN-1 SecuRemote will work!

During the install, choose install VPN-1 SecuRemote.  Also choose install on all network adapters.

Now you will have to reboot again.

Get with your network administrator to configure VPN-1 SecuRemote.  Make sure you can ping the VPN server.  To ping, go to start->run and type command.  Hit OK.  Now in the command window, type ping 123.5.5.5 or whatever the IP address of the VPN server is.  If you can ping the server, that means you have network connectivity to it.  If you can't ping it, you may have a different problem.

If VPN-1 all of a sudden stops working, there is a tool that just might help.  Open VPN-1 SecuRemote and use Tools->Rebind Adapters.
